Utah - the last beach

We've arrived at Utah, the last of the landing beaches. That won't be the end of the war stuff, but it'll have a different focus in the next week.

There was a big museum at Utah. Lots of visitors with very poor mask etiquet outside but good inside. I had to queue for 1/2 hour to get in then wait for movies in English so it took a while to get around.

Utah at the museum near La Madeleine

A cunningly disguised bunker. Didn't do 'em any good as Widerstandnest 5 (WN5), of which this was part, fell without much of a fight.

All the areas with significant lumps of concrete are shown by the arrows. Our park-up is WN13.

We cut back to see a location for an episode of Band of Brothers - excellent series - where they took out a battery of guns.

The guns were lined up along the tree line on the right edge of this shot, and the top right corner of the field is where Lt Winter had his men attack from. Apparently the attack is still studied as a exemplary tactical small unit action.

The national sport - Boules/Petanque. J has bought a set so we can join in.

This old fort marks the north end of the landing beach (I think)

Baches/cribs/summer homes at St Marcouf. Looks very pleasant, though some aren't any bigger than Reggie.

Stützpunkt 12 I believe. Commands the beach don't you think? Shell impacts suggest it was taken out from the land side, probably by a tank coming up from the south.

I've just been bitten twice by a mossie so I've called in the Raid artillery and will retire from the area to avoid friendly fire. I'll leave you with these.
