Moose (not), and non-vicious cycles

Our sleep in the zoo carpark was quiet and uninterrupted. We wandered up to the zoo at opening time and had a good 3 hr mooch. And yes, J got to see a moose up close. Actually we saw lots of animals up close, most of them sleeping or sun-bathing as it turned out to be a cracking day. This doesn't lead to great action shots however. [Edit - it turns out what we thought was a moose was a forest reindeer.]

Having just been fed (hmm, yum, trachea and lungs) mum looks for a sunny spot to lie down

A pack of wolf pups watching the little lamby-wamby in the next enclosure. They just wanna be friends, honest

At last J gets to see her moose and can put a moose sticker on Reggie. [Edit - nope this is a reindeer.] It'll need the Norway bit cut off, and a cage drawn in, but she has seen one in Scandinavia one way or another. (Campervans that have been to Scandinavia sport a moose sticker. Sometimes you see them with 3 or even more. Our theories about what they meant have included:
  • You'd hit one while driving. I suppose MHs would be covered in hedgehog stickers if that were true.
  • You'd been to Nordkapp, the northernmost part of Scandinavia
  • You'd simply seen one.
However, it turns out you only have to visit Scandinavia to 'qualify')

Forest reindeer, not moose

Another non-moose

Foxy lady.

A sleepy bear. How rude of it not to pose for us.

A massive anthill. At least they were active. We discovered later when we were swamped by flying things that it was ant flying day today, at least at this part of the world.

This was the saddest part of the zoo. Two eagles in a small enclosure, unable to spread their wings much, let alone fly. The zoo may have a reason for this - perhaps it helps with the breeding programme - but it wasn't how you'd like to see these birds.

A George Clooney.*

A Swedish lynx

One of many of the owls in the park. They must have a chicken factory somewhere for all the chicks they need

Red deer, also not a moose

After the zoo we thought we'd check out the biking again. We have stumbled on to the Pump Cycling world champs this weekend. It seems to be a little like BMX. The place was heaving with mountain bikers as well. We took advantage of the buffet lunch at the hotel, perhaps only the second or third time we've eaten out, and very good value for money. After filling our bellies we took the chair lift up the mountain for a look.

Another anthill

This is apparently a 'pump' track. We noticed that after an initial couple pedals the good riders didn't pedal for the whole circuit, instead 'pumping' for energy off the turns and downhills. There were some very fast riders and these were the juniors. We will hopefully see some of the open riders tomorrow.

The same dude from yesterday's video. He was so confidant!

Action girl

No dinner necessary after that big lunch, so time to catch up blogs, watch some crap TV, read, etc.

*Silver Fox. Geddit?
